video games
I bought a PS3 in 2016 and bought a bunch of PS1 classics from the store
for a few dollars each. I later bought a PSP and found out that you could
transfer PS1 games and save files between PS3 and PSP. Sony continued
to push updates to PS3 eventually breaking that functionality so I had to
install custom firmware to continue using the devices as I previously had. I
bought a PS4 only to play Bloodborne ($110 for the console and used disk) and
upon logging into my account I could see my previous purchases but could not
play any of those games. And of course Bloodborne requires a monthly subsciption
fee for online features, no thanks. I bought an Xbox One around 2019 and while
Rare Replay, backwards compatibility, and $1 Game Pass deals were fun I quickly
realized this thing is a huge piece of shit. I picked up a Steam Deck in 2025 after
Trump announced his tariff policy, I knew prices were going to rise. It
was more money than I wanted to spend but heck the thing allows you to access
a Linux desktop. I can plug in a keyboard and mouse and connect to my network drive.
I can pirate games, play modded games, play emulated games, or check
email or whatever. I can back up my files to external storage.
I have a soft spot for video game consoles from the 80's to the
early 2000's, after that they became closed garden PCs. Video game consoles are dead.
